Las Chapas area of Marbella has a registered population of about 13,000, although the actual figure is estimated to be double that.
The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, announced this week that in order to meet the needs of such a large community, the project will soon be put to tender for a new health centre for the area, which will be five times the size of the present one.
The site chosen is a 10,000-square-metre plot of land in Calle Hacienda San Manuel.
The council plans to build an indoor swimming pool and sports area on the same site. It is very central, close to the Pinolivo and Las Dunas schools. An alternative previously considered in Plaza Chile had to be ruled out for technical reasons.
Construction is expected to begin this year, and be completed by the end of 2022.
